July 6, 2007--Lake Fork Texas

Well it rained all night last night, and part of the morning. According to my rain gauge, we received between 1 1/2 & 1 3/4 in.. The lake is almost a foot above pool stage, and water temperature is 84 degrees. The lake is still rising.
Yes, I went fishing this morning in the rain with one of my neighbors. He had caught a couple small bass before he got to my boathouse on topwater, and got another one in the back yard before we left. We decided to try and find deeper fish, so we fished roadbeds, pond levees, points, etc..We fished for about 3 hrs. and didn't catch a single fish. When we got back, he brought his children over and they caught several nice catfish. (Danny King Punch Bait) By this time, the sun was out and the day was beautiful. After lunch and a much needed "power nap" for me, my 5 yr old grandson who is staying with us a couple of days decided we should try the bass again because he wanted to be the "net" man. How can one say no to reasoning like that??? I thought we'd explore some old places, and low and behold we were able to fool one very nice 6 pounder. (lost another pretty good fish) Caught it on Carolina Rig, (1 oz wt with braided line and flourocarbon leader) using a watermelon/candy baby brushhog. We came back and late this afternoon decided to try our luck again and this time we took Nanny/Gran with us. We tried some of the same spots we caught fish yesterday afternoon in the rain, but got not a single topwater bite. Came home "TIRED" . I really hope we get a break from the rain ---the ground is super saturated. I don't know when I'll be able to mow, and playing golf is out of the question for several days . . Another wet day

It rained all day today up here on Lake Fork and heavy rains are expected again tonight. Temperature this afternoon was 75 degrees and the water temperature was 82 degrees. The water is a bit stained due to runoff, but I was able to find some clear water up a protected creek. With grandson and wife in the boat, we left the house in the rain, rode in the rain, fished in the rain, and came home in the rain. (wet) We only fished about 45 minutes, but were able to catch a couple bass. (one bout a lb., and the other bout 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 lbs) Caught them on a frog in 3-5 feet of water near a creek channel. It probably would have been good late afternoon fishing since there was no lightning, and the temperature was cool with light rain, but we didn't want to battle the elements. Fishing on Fork 4th of July

Fishing on Lake Fork is quite different this year. We've had so much rain, and the lake is well above pool stage. Generally for bass this time of year, we'd be fishing almost entirely deep with Carolina rigs, however with the high water, and the cooler temperatures, there's still good fishing in the shallows. The water temperature today was 84 degrees, and we caught fish in four to 8 feet of water between the rain storms. Caught a good slot fish (5 1/2 lbs) on topwater in 4 1/2 feet of water right behind the house. The wind is still a factor--changing directions at will it seems. Catfishing is still VERY GOOD on Danny King's punch bait. Night Crawlers are also effective, but the bream and turtles steal your bait. See attached pictures of grandkids and their catches from our bulkhead. Tight lines to all . All golfing is on hold due to all the wet weather. Wade
